We visited Lady Elliot at the end of the turtle hatching season. Just after sunset when the sand has cooled down the hatchlings dig their way out of their nest of eggs, which has been buried in the sand some months before. The hatchlings are attracted to lowest point on the horizon but also to light, and so some of them find their way to the lights of the resort (if they avoid being eaten by seagulls). The photo above shows Malene with a green turtle which we helped find its way into the pacific ocean. If the turtle escapes the patrolling sharks in the lagoon it may live to be 400 years old.
