Last week we went to the Metro in Sydney to see a triple bill gig: Isis, Laura and These Arms Are Snakes. What a night! Laura was the first band and they had already started when we arrived, but fortunately we got the see three or four songs. The music was in line with Isis, although the Melbourne group is not as convincing. These Arms Are Snakes was a huge surprise to us and the rest of the audience. Apparently, a lot of the macho men really hated the energetic lead singer. A guy I met in the restroom was furious--I didn't understand a word he was saying except: "What a cock!"... Snakes is an important alt-rock band in the tradition of Mclusky and The Faint.

Isis was really amazing. I missed their concert when they played at the Roskilde Festival a few years ago, so I was eager to finally see them. Isis are the founders of modern art metal, like a polished and more accessible version of Godflesh. The sometimes lengthy build-up in their songs may not always work when you hear them on your stereo at home, but when heard live they blow you away. Perhaps you just have to play them very loudly at home, and it'll work (to be tested). The concert was great and I hope to see Isis again soon.
